Nova Era: Atom Opens Sci-Fi MMORPG Playtest on Steam
!games@lemmy.world Space MMORPGs usually come in a few familiar flavors: the spreadsheet-heavy sandbox, the theme park with a starship paint job, or the survival game with better lighting. Nova Era: Atom from developer Amazing Game tries something different. It combines space exploration, extraction gameplay and a universe built heavily on Chinese mythology. An open playtest is now live on Steam and runs through October 11.
Players enter the sTring Realm, pitched as a "high-dimensional universe" full of galaxies to chart, alien creatures and abandoned megastructures. Those derelict alien ruins are more than set dressing. In an extraction game, they are where the loot lives, and loot is where the risk comes from. How well that balance holds up over long sessions could decide whether the core loop works. The mythological setting could also give the game a visual and narrative identity in a genre that mostly relies on hard sci-fi or pulpy space opera.
At the center is your ship, the Flux-Copre Vessel, which works as much as a character sheet as a vehicle. Weapons, defenses, propulsion and modifications can be combined and upgraded with gathered resources. The standout feature is a system of hot-swappable chips that let you reconfigure the ship on the fly, even mid-combat. In extraction games, fights are often decided before they start by whoever brought the right loadout. Adapting during an encounter could make fights less predictable and give skilled pilots a way to recover from a bad start. It could also turn out to feel more hectic than tactical.
Access is not instant. Interested players request a spot on Steam and are notified when the studio adds more participants. The open format suggests Amazing Game wants feedback at scale rather than from a small, curated group. The timing is crowded: Aion 2 has just opened its pre-download on Steam, and RuneScape is rolling out its biggest area expansion yet. A newcomer needs a clear hook, and extraction mechanics plus ship-based builds plus Chinese mythology is at least an unusual one.
Does mid-fight loadout swapping sound like real tactical depth to you, or like a gimmick that undermines the preparation extraction games are built on?
