Frogger Junior Hops Onto Amstrad GX4000 and Spectrum Next

!games@lemmy.world Konami's 1981 arcade classic Frogger has a new incarnation, and it's landing on two machines rarely seen on release lists: the Amstrad GX4000 and the ZX Spectrum Next. Frogger Junior is a modern reimagining by the development trio RedBug, Pulsophonic and TITAN, and it's available now.

Unlike the story-free original, this version gives its heroine a motive. A young, ambitious frog enters a competition whose prize is her very own property portfolio. She is dodging traffic to become a small-time landlord.

The structure stays familiar. First comes a multi-lane highway where cars and trucks move at unpredictable speeds, so memorising a single rhythm won't cut it. Then comes a fast river with shifting currents, crossed by hopping on drifting logs while avoiding crocodiles. You can lose a life in three ways: getting flattened by a truck, falling into deep water, or being eaten by a croc. As a small safety net, extra lives appear at random spots on the stage, which raises the question of whether a risky detour is worth it.

The goal is to guide the frog into one of five empty houses on the shoreline. Each house holds only one frog, so every run becomes a small routing puzzle, and the last free house is always the hardest to reach. Fill all five and the game gets faster and meaner, in the classic arcade loop.

The colourful, pixel-precise graphics were made entirely with Multipaint, a popular art tool for retro machines. That hints at a broader trend: good-looking art is becoming easier for small teams targeting niche hardware.

Frogger Junior doesn't reinvent anything. Its property-hungry frog, random extra lives and one-frog-per-house rule add personality without breaking the formula. The bigger story may be the platforms. Small teams keep choosing systems like the GX4000 and Spectrum Next, alongside ports such as Flashback on the Atari ST and community competitions like MSXdev26. Could a game this easy to grasp draw curious newcomers beyond the existing owners, and which arcade classic deserves the same treatment next?
