Tyrant Tactics Beta: Advance Wars-Style Strategy in 2088

!games@lemmy.world Tyrant Tactics: Birth of Revolution makes no secret of its roots: it's a turn-based strategy game in the Advance Wars mould, set in the year 2088, and a beta is now open for sign-ups. You build armies, assign commanders and carry a revolution across the globe against the imperialist forces of the United Nations of Earth, a friendly-sounding name cast firmly as the villain.

The campaign spans more than 20 levels, though nothing has been revealed about the story or mission length. The bigger ambition lies in the battlefield itself: combat takes place on land, at sea, in the air and in outer space, a fourth theatre the genre rarely explores. To fill it, the game offers 28 unit types, 16 of them unique mechs. Each faction brings its own commanders, units and tactical identity, so picking a side should mean more than swapping colours. Whether the factions truly play differently is one of the things the beta will reveal.

The most striking rule: once your reserves are gone, surrender is the only option. No clawing back to victory with a lone unit hiding in a corner. That should make every loss count and every move deliberate, but it could also feel harsh for players who like to gamble, and a lot will depend on balancing.

Up to four players can join, online or locally on one screen, teaming up or fighting each other across several game modes that haven't been detailed yet. Couch strategy has become rare, and four friends arguing over who left the mechs undefended is an appealing prospect. Access is requested via the beta sign-up page, with no word yet on when testing starts or how many players get in.

Is a strict surrender rule the tension the genre needs, or just a recipe for frustration, and does space combat add real depth to a grid-based tactics game?
