Diablo 4 Seasons Will Continue After Diablo 5 Arrives

Many players read that as the start of a farewell, but the studio says Diablo IV is not being retired. Seasons, the rotating content updates that have kept the game going since launch, will continue. The condition is simple: players have to keep showing up.

Game director Brent Gibson told Icy Veins: "We are planning on supporting seasons as long as the community continues to show up for D4." He compared the approach to Diablo II and Diablo III, which kept getting ladder and seasonal content long after their successors were announced. "There are still people who play those games, and as long as you're showing up, we're going to continue to be making content." Diablo IV's lifespan is now tied to its player count rather than to a date on a roadmap.

Gibson doesn't yet know what future seasons will contain, since the team is still working out how the two games will coexist. He did outline a rough framework. Some seasonal features will move into the permanent game and others won't. Mechanics from earlier seasons could also return later. He called the shift from expansions to seasons "liberating" for storytelling, because hundreds of years of lore separate Diablo IV and Diablo V. Smaller, more frequent seasons could explore that gap more flexibly than one large expansion.

Losing expansions hurts, because those were the big updates that reshaped the game. Still, seasonal content is what keeps an online action RPG alive week to week. The move fits a wider trend: Bungie insists Destiny 2 isn't finished, and The Division 2 still gets paid content years after launch. Studios seem reluctant to abandon games that still have an audience.

The open-ended promise carries a risk. Blizzard will likely watch player numbers closely, and Diablo V will inevitably pull attention away. That could mean smaller seasons, longer gaps or fewer new systems, though nothing has been announced. The recent struggles at Elder Scrolls Online after layoffs show how quickly support levels can change behind the scenes. The key question is whether seasonal stories will act as a bridge toward Diablo V, turning Diablo IV into more than a holding pattern.
