NetEase Trademarks ECC: Redline, a Possible New MMORPG

It classifies Redline as a multiplayer online computer game and explicitly lists "entertainment services, namely, providing massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPG)."

That's nearly all there is. No studio, no platform beyond "computer game," no genre details, no release window, and no word on what "ECC" stands for or whether Redline is a standalone title or part of something bigger. There's no trailer, screenshot or store page, and NetEase hasn't commented. Trademarks often describe intended use rather than finished work, and publishers routinely register names they later drop, rename or sit on for years.

The name on the form is what makes this worth watching. NetEase is deeply invested in online games, with Once Human, Where Winds Meet, Diablo Immortal and Sea of Remnants in its catalogue. It also has another multiplayer RPG, Ananta, scheduled for January 2027. When a publisher with that track record files for a name tied to MMORPG services, there's probably at least an idea behind it.

Redline may not end up as a traditional MMO. Many modern online games blur the lines between MMORPG, action game and survival sandbox, and NetEase's portfolio shows the company doesn't stick to one formula. The broad trademark language leaves plenty of room.

The filing suggests NetEase is expanding its online RPG lineup rather than trimming it, even before Ananta launches. It arrives amid a busy period for the genre: Aion 2 is heading into early access, Nova Era: Atom is running a Steam playtest, and ArcheAge S is experimenting with naval MMORPG design. Signs to watch for include the name appearing in other trademark offices, job listings or a showcase. A Redline reveal before Ananta ships would say a lot about how many online games NetEase is willing to run side by side.
