Doctrineers Beta: Bid for Airships in Turn-Based War

!games@lemmy.world Doctrineers, a new turn-based strategy game, has opened sign-ups for its beta playtest. It targets two of the genre's oldest problems: matches that drag on, and openings that become predictable once everyone has learned the best moves. The developers promise "fast gameplay and strategic variety," with no two matches unfolding the same way.

The most intriguing idea is a bidding phase at the start of every multiplayer match. Players bid against each other for the exclusive right to deploy special doctrinal units, and only one side gets each unit. The units revealed so far are stealthy Commandos, speedy Armored Cars and devastating Airships. Strategic decisions therefore begin before the first shot. Do you pay heavily for the Airships and accept weaknesses elsewhere, or let your opponent overpay and punish them for it? The open question is balance. If one doctrinal unit proves clearly superior, the bidding could become just as predictable as the openings it is meant to replace. That is exactly what a playtest should reveal.

The single-player content is surprisingly substantial for a beta. The campaign has more than 30 missions, each built around its own tactical problem. Some are amphibious assaults that push troops from sea to land. Others are desperate breakouts, where escaping an encirclement matters more than wiping out the enemy. A hard mode doesn't simply inflate enemy stats but adds fresh twists to every level.

Online, players can fight live or asynchronously, taking their turns whenever they find time. That suits anyone juggling work and family. There is also a ranked ladder and an integrated map editor, and custom maps can go straight into multiplayer battles. Player-made maps often keep a strategy community alive long after the official content goes stale. Fans of Advance Wars-style handheld wargames should feel at home, though the bidding layer could set Doctrineers apart.

Access can be requested on the game's sign-up page, and the developers call the battles "a matter of doctrine or death." No playtest date, platforms or release window have been announced yet. The feature list is ambitious for a smaller project. It fits a broader trend of indie teams opening betas early to gather feedback before launch.

Would a pre-match bidding war make turn-based strategy more interesting for you, or does giving one side exclusive superweapons sound like a balancing nightmare?
